Southeastern Region of NATS

April Newsletter from Toni Anderson, Regional Governor

SPRING AND SUMMER REGIONAL NEWS

April, 2010

As I was driving the long way back to LaGrange from Stetson, I was thinking about how worthy of the time and energy it was again this year to attend the Regional Auditions.  This summer I’m sure I will feel the same way about attending the National Conference in Salt Lake City.  Let me encourage all of our Region’s members to be as active as you possibly can in NATS activities on the Chapter, District, and National levels.  See below about the availability of funding to help independent teachers attend the National Conference.

Thank you, Craig Maddox

The 2010 Regional NATSAA and NATS Student auditions were a great success.  I extend my heartfelt thanks to our colleagues at Stetson University who hosted these events, especially our Registrar, Craig Maddox.  After twelve years of faithful service, Dr. Maddox has decided that this was his last year to serve as registrar.  He will be sorely missed.  Thanks, too, to Lloyd Linney, Stephen Ng, Jane Christeson, Carole Clifford, and Russell Franks for making this event run smoothly

Adam Kirkpatrick, regional NATSAA Winner

Adam Kirkpatrick from Georgia was chosen as our Regional NATSAA winner and will represent the Southeastern Region at the national conference in Salt Lake City this summer.  First Alternate is Jennifer Bryant from Alabama, and second alternate is Anna Hersey from Florida.  Special thanks go to our NATSAA judges: Roy Delp, William Vessels, and Linda Banister.

michelle Debruyn, Emerging leaders award

Michelle Debruyn of Georgia has been chosen from our region to receive an Emerging Leaders Award and will also be one of the SERNATS national convention attendees.

honoring roy delp at the student auditions

Congratulations to the many outstanding singers who made it to the Final Round of the student auditions.  It was a powerful experience to spend Friday evening and Saturday afternoon hearing so many passionate and skillful performances.  Special recognition of Roy Delp’s thirty-five years of service to NATS opened the Friday night session.  Please take time to look at the tribute to Professor Delp that is now on www.sernats.org.

I enjoyed meeting some of our new NATS members and spending time with colleagues and friends of long standing.  I hope to see many of you at the national conference this summer.  Please note that national NATS has grant money available to independent teachers to help offset the cost of attending the conference.  See the national website (www.nats.org) for details.

Regional cabinet news

Prior to the NATSAA event, the Regional Cabinet (http://www.sernats.org/ ) met to discuss several issues that were presented at the business meeting on Friday evening.  At the Saturday lunch meeting, NATS Treasurer Lloyd Mims engaged the membership in a dialogue concerning national initiatives and directions.  Please take time to read the minutes from both of these important meetings on our website.

Thank you for your vote of confidence in electing me to a second term as your Regional Governor.  I look forward to working with each of you as we serve our students and fulfill the mission of NATS.    – Toni Anderson
